Meet our founder.
Liz Freel believed that powerlifting could change lives.
As a teenager, Liz battled anorexia while training as an Olympic hopeful in equestrian. Although the sport taught her discipline, her eating disorder nearly claimed her life, eventually leaving her in a coma due to severe health complications. During her recovery, she discovered powerlifting—a sport that became the catalyst for healing, purpose, and a lifelong mission.
Despite entering a male-dominated sport, Liz persevered. She became a record-setting powerlifter, respected coach, and mentor who believed every athlete deserved the opportunity to succeed. While she loved competing, her greatest passion became helping others find the same confidence and purpose that powerlifting had given her.
Having coached dozens of athletes, many facing financial hardship or lacking basic equipment, Liz realized that lasting change comes from within. She believed that powerlifting could provide that reason for change by giving people discipline, confidence, and a supportive community.
On April 6, 2024, Liz passed away following a courageous battle with cancer. Her legacy, however, lives on through every athlete empowered by the Foundation she created. Today, the USPA Powerlifting Foundation continues her mission of creating access, building community, and helping athletes realize their dreams through the transformative power of powerlifting.
May Liz's legacy continue to inspire generations of lifters to come.
